Regretfully, I am no longer actively developing BeOS software. If anyone is interested in obtaining rights to the source code for any of my BeOS programs, contact me. The BeOS pages on this site are archival in nature.

Kagi - For BeOS Software Authors

[last updated 12/19/98]

Kagi is a software registration service that can accept a variety of payments from software users. Kagi handles all aspects of registering software; collection of payer information, processing of payments, replies to payers, detailed accounting to software authors, site license invoicing, etc. The idea is to make it easier for everyone involved with software: easier for users to pay software fees by providing a variety of payment methods; easier for software authors by lightening the administrative burden.

Kagi, Inc.

Supported platforms include Macintosh, Newton, Windows, and now BeOS. The Kagi Web Site has an FAQ which explains a lot more than I describe here.

Software authors include a Register application with their product and refer users to it in their documentation. The Register app guides users through submitting their payment information to Kagi by check, credit card, cash in multiple currencies, or First Virtual accounts. The information can be relayed by the Postal Service, E-Mail, FAX, or the BeOS E-Mail services. Kagi also provides website based registration.

Contrasted with other web-based registration services, Kagi allows your potentil customers to easily select the method of payment most convenient to them. The Be web site also has an article which discusses the Kagi service and how it relates to the others available.

Release

Here is the latest release of the Kagi author package for BeOS Preview Release, so software publishers on BeOS can evaluate whether it is right for their products and start making use of the service (105K). Select the PPC or Intel release packages:

The release also contains an author application to edit the Register app's resources, which is how you customize it for your products. An html file is included as instructions, which you can also get here

I've created a bunch of screen shots of the Register app in action, if you just want to take a peek, or if you are thinking about using the service but don't have BeOS installed yet. See the Overview page.

Setup

The downloaded archive is a zip file, which you can unpack with either the BeOS Expander or with unzip in a Terminal window. The result is a folder called "Kagi Author" in which you should see the Register and KagiAuthor applications.

Take a look at the instructions to get the Register app configured to ship with your product (the file is also included in the author package archive).

This web site has a user oriented page which you may want to refer to in either the Read Me file you put on the Be FTP site, or in product announcements, or wherever you think people might want to take a quick peek at it. It's just a little introduction to the Register app for the timid...

I keep a mailing list of BeOS developers registered as Kagi authors. Send me email if you wish to be on that list, it's how I let authors know of updates, issues, etc.
