Regretfully, I am no longer actively developing BeOS software. If anyone is
interested in obtaining rights to the source code for any of my BeOS
programs, contact me. The BeOS
pages on this site are archival in nature.
How did I get hooked on the BeBox, and how has it gone? Well, I've traced my file-date
trail and come up with the following.
- 11/16/95 Saw an item on DaveNet
about the BeBox. Dave's comments are sometimes indecipherable, but it was at least clear
something interesting was going on at their web site, and I saw it posted on someone's sig
the same day on a Mac newsgroup. Thus, my drooling began.
- 11/17/95 Pondered whether they were for real. Decided I didn't care at the
moment, and started gathering as much info as I could from comp.sys.powerpc and their web
site. Started obsessing about the machine, solely based on the pictures and the spec
sheets. Caught some serious toy-lust. Tried to get some work done on my real job.
- 11/20/95 Did some soul searching this past week, because this had obviously
tweaked some deep-seated issues with me, regarding work, play, hobbies, computers, life,
and everything. Revealed my new obsession to my wife, who promptly responded with
"uh-oh," as if she'd seen that look on me before. At least I don't collect cars.
- 11/21/95 Filled out the Be Developer application! Crossed my fingers and hit the
Send button on my mailer. Started figuring out how to scrape together the $ and how to
convince my wife I needed a major toy, given that we had a new baby coming in six months
with the associated expenses to cover.
- 11/24/95 Started consciously talking myself down, convincing myself I'd just have
to wait until next year like everyone else. "There'll be a thousand applications, why
will mine be special?" but secretly harbored a hope that they would, and that my
skills were something they were interested in bringing to the machine.
- 12/7/95 I'm in! Got my acceptance letter from C.K. Haun, whom I'd abused at the
Mac WWDC quite often about various MacOS issues. Now I've really got to figure out where
the money will come from! Started brainstorming designs and implementation, even though I
knew nothing about really developing software on the box yet.
- 12/12/95 Lots of negotiating with my wife the past few days, bless her. Sent in
the order. Got a response that I was on the list for the next shipment, probably before
Christmas!
- 12/21/95 Got a fax from C.K. saying they were trying to ship my BeBox, but the
credit card number on my Fax was unreadable. Damn! Rush another fax out, hoping they
wouldn't send it to someone else.
- 12/22/95 Take off for Florida for Christmas vacation. Bring BeBook stuff I'd
taken off the web site for reading material. Did quite a bit more drooling over vacation,
realizing how many things were going to be clean and simple, compared to the things I was
trying to accomplish on my Mac at work.
- 12/30/95 Come home from Florida to find the boxes arrived and were brought in
safely by friends. Start staying up late at night working with the command line compilers
and my BeBook. See my comments on the experience in First
Impressions
Well, the honeymoon's over, and now I'm grappling with the real issues involved in
taking my ideas to this box. Best of luck to all of us Be Developers, and hoping this
platform will take us new places!
